So much for journalism.
I applaud Chris Matthews for his stance on Morning Joe. When he said “I want to do everything I can to make this thing work, this new Presidency work.”, he was, in essence, stating that he was unwilling to participate in the standard round table circle jerk that passes itself off as TV journalism today.
I remember when old school newsmen such as Douglas Edwards, Walter Cronkite, Chet Huntley, David Brinkley, John Chancellor, et al, merely reported the news; they didn’t attempt to second-guess or editorialize or subvert the story they were reporting on. President Carter awarded Cronkite the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his journalistic work, but few of today’s “journalists” would ever merit such recognition. Most of them are far too busy postulating, pontificating, and pandering to the dissention addicts who have little else to do but feast on “junk food news”.
I remember how, until just recently, CNN and Headline News had unbiased, non-stop reporting of hard news and real events. Now it‘s just talking heads giving their skewed rendition and more opinion. They’ve morphed into tabloid television, offering infotainment such as Showbiz Tonight, Nancy Grace , Glenn Beck, etc. Anchorpersons such as Lou Dobbs, Campbell Brown, Rick Sanchez, Jack Cafferty and others, don’t report real news anymore. In addition, many so-called “experts” and “pundits” have padded their pockets as on the news channels to the detriment of actual news and facts. There has been an erosion of journalistic standards throughout the news business
And, of course, Fox News and MSNBC have been anything but unbiased for a long, long time.
So how did we get to this? Probably because news as entertainment and opinion as news trumps actual news reporting, both commercially and ratings-wise.
When Chris Matthews refused to join in with Joe Scarborough, Mika Brzezinski, and Willie Geist in raking Obama over the coals before his presidency even starts, they turned on him like a pack of wolves and accused him of not being a journalist. But has any rational person ever accused any of them of ever BEING a journalist?
Hats off to Chris Matthews for taking the high road. We need a fresh start!
I guess the thrill running up Matthew’s leg has not subsided.
I don’t care what side of the political spectrum you align yourself with, the fact of the matter is, with that statement, Chris Matthews has proved himself a disgrace, squandered any hint of credibility he may have had left from the “thrill going up his leg” remark, and has disqualified himself forever, from the profession of journalism.
In one breath he’s calling himself a journalist, and in the next, he’s pledging his devotion, like an early-sixties high school girl would have to her heart throb. The only difference is that Matthews didn’t stand up, so we couldn’t see his poodle skirt.
What an utterly disgraceful display, and good for Joe Scarborough, for holding his feet to the fire, and not letting Matthew’s insipid remark go unchallenged.
I wonder if Mr. Faulkner would take his hat off to a so-called journalist who would shill for a Republican? More importantly, I wonder if Mr. Faulkner could ever bring himself to trust anything that journalist ever says again?
Thank you for taking the time to discuss this, I feel strongly about it and I benefit from learning about this topic. Please, as you gain knowledge, please add to this blog with new information. I have found it enormously useful.
