During the entire civil rights movement, most of the racial divides in BOTH the north and south, were being overcome through sit-ins and mass protesting. The civil rights act merely outlawed the discrimination by private businesses and public businesses(intervention into the private preferences of individuals). So racial discrimination was not necessarily overcome, it was outlawed by government decree. But slavery was not abolished because of government intervention, it was ALREADY being overcome through mass protesting, the government simply found it useful to outlaw it so that it could profit from it(fines for such discriminatory acts).
So when Ayn Rand claims that slavery was abolished because the north rallied against it, that is not necessarily the truth. The north was the foremost profiteer of slavery in America. It was from their ports in the north that slaves were imparted to the south. What the south did was merely to lend itself to the problem, slavery was slowly evaporating. When people claim that the underground railroad led slaves to the north this is true, but it led them to Canada north, not Maine north, as most people seem to explain away.
